Pesticide Use Requirements

The use of pesticides on University property other than by trained professionals is prohibited.

Restricted Use Pesticide applications may be performed by University employees who have made arrangements to be trained, registered with the State, and are performing the work under the "direct supervision" of a pesticide professional who is certified by the State in the category of the application. Otherwise, professional contractors who are appropriately trained and certified by the State will be hired to assist with pest control needs at Tulane University.  General Use Pesticide applications may be performed by University employees who have been trained in the proper and safe application of the pesticide as long as application is consistent with manufacturer recommendations for use.

Pest Control Prevention

  • Proper sanitation is a critical component of pest control. The following practices are beneficial to control pests:
  • Store materials at least 6 inches off of the floor.
  • Keep areas clean, especially break areas and pantries where food is present.
  • Keep countertops, areas under or behind equipment and appliances, and the interiors of drawers and cabinets clean and free of food particles.
  • Properly store food in sealed containers.
  • Promptly clean up any food or beverage spills.
  • Keep garbage receptacles clean. Keep large waste receptacles covered.
  • Seal penetrations in the building envelope so that outside pests cannot enter the building.
  • Repair or report leaks to deprive insects and rodents of a water source.
